津軽地方に伝わるこぎん刺しと、韓国で生活の中から生まれた布文化ポジャギの構造を用いています。

 

こぎん刺しは、寒冷な土地において布の保温と補強を目的とし、反復によって文様を生み出す技法です。
一方ポジャギは、残布を継ぎ合わせ、新たな秩序を与えることで布を再生させてきました。

 

両者に共通しているのは、限られた素材や制約のなかで工夫を重ね、誰かを思いながら手を動かし続けてきた静かな営みです。そこには、つくることそのものの純粋な喜びも宿っていたのではないでしょうか。

 

日本と韓国という隣り合う土地は、歴史のなかで揺れ動きながらも、手仕事の領域においては響き合う感覚を持っています。異なる文化的背景を持つ技法を一枚の布の上に重ねることで、境界を越えて共存する構造を探りました。

 

つまみ縫いに用いた色糸の多くは、亡き母の裁縫箱に残されていたものです。布を継ぎ、糸目を重ねる行為は、隣国との対話であると同時に、時間を越えて母と交わす対話でもあります。

 

過去と現在、個人的記憶と地域文化が交差する地点において、布は生成の基盤として立ち上がります。藍の染めむらと呼応しながら層を重ね、ひとつの宇宙のような感触を生み出しています。

It incorporates the structure of kogin embroidery from Japan’s Tsugaru region and pojagi, a textile tradition that emerged from everyday life in Korea.

Kogin embroidery developed in cold climates as a technique for insulating and reinforcing cloth, producing patterns through repetition. Pojagi, by contrast, has regenerated fabric by piecing together remnants and giving them new order.

What these two practices share is a quiet mode of making: working within limited materials and constraints, devising ingenuity, and continuing to move one’s hands while thinking of someone. Within this process, there may also reside a pure joy in the act of making itself.

Japan and Korea, neighboring lands, have shifted through complex histories; yet within the realm of handcraft, they seem to resonate with one another. By layering techniques rooted in different cultural backgrounds onto a single piece of cloth, I explored a structure of coexistence that crosses boundaries.

Many of the colored threads used in the pinching stitches were left in my late mother’s sewing box. The act of joining fabric and layering stitches becomes not only a dialogue with a neighboring country, but also a conversation with my mother across time.

At the point where past and present, personal memory and regional culture intersect, the cloth rises as a ground of generation. In resonance with the irregularities of indigo dye, the layered surface evokes a sensation akin to a small universe.
